Cheshire devolution deal on hold
A potential devolution deal for Cheshire has been put on hold following talks between the three main local authorities in the region, with Cheshire West and Chester Council leader Samantha Dixon revealing that the government’s insistence on an elected mayor has made it difficult for politicians to come to an agreement.
Last week, it was reported that Cheshire was likely to be getting an elected mayor as part of a devolution deal set to be revealed in the coming weeks.
But the leaders of Warrington, Cheshire West and Chester, and Cheshire East councils have now issued a joint statement to update stakeholders about the initiative.
It said: “Following political discussions in Warrington a potential consultation with the public and businesses on a proposed devolution deal for Cheshire and Warrington has been put on hold.
“We remain strongly committed to collaborative working on a number of key initiatives and we will continue to explore how best to secure more power and resources for our area.” Read More
