Cheshire ‘Set for elected Mayor’

Cheshire is understood to be getting an elected mayor as part of a devolution deal that is set to be revealed in the coming weeks.

Councils in Warrington, Cheshire East, and Cheshire West and Chester submitted proposals to transfer powers to the county in August 2015 but the government has indicated that there must be a mayor in order for devolution to proceed, according to the BBC.

The local authorities claimed at the time that their plans could lead to a doubling of the size of the county’s economy, the creation of 110,000 jobs, the building of more than 115,000 homes, and an improvement to transport and skills infrastructure.

Devolution deals that involve the creation of elected mayors have already been agreed for several English regions including Greater Manchester and the Liverpool City Region in the North West. Read More
