Work has begun on a project to transform Macclesfield’s historic South Park following the award of a significant grant to help finance the £223,000 scheme.

Cheshire East Council has secured £49,000 in Wren funding to help it carry out major works to upgrade and modernise existing sports and recreation facilities. Wren distributes grants for community projects using money donated from the landfill communities fund, which is created from landfill levies.

A substantial proportion of the cost will be covered by section 106 contributions from property developers.

The work is being delivered by the local authority’s wholly owned company Ansa, which looks after the borough’s parks and open spaces.

The lake at the park, which dates back to the 1920s, is set to be fully restored after the removal of approximately 2,500 cubic metres of silt that has accumulated over the years. And an 11-week long programme of works will involve the installation of a multi-use games arena and a complete overhaul and resurfacing of the park’s tennis courts, together with other new sports facilities to create a fitness zone ‘action station’. Read More
